Irish Artist based in Belfast, working in a wide range of media including. drawing, painting and photography with a particular focus on bronze cast sculpture over the past 20 years.
A Note on Process
” A study usually starts with loose sketches/photographs as inspiration, based observations of the human figure or animals, or something in the natural landscape or other stimuli from books / library research e.g Greek Mythology or architecture, leading to experimental 3D modelling work. This visual thinking is then refined and developed in the studio, by making wax/clay models, which often lead to the casting processes in the foundry. Bronze outcomes are usually created from sand cast or lost wax processes depending on the necessary requirement.
The joy of making and crafting at all stages towards production of the finished patinated bronze outcome is very fulfilling as an artist. Influences include artists like, Ronan Gillespie, John Behan, and F E Mc William among others.”
Fine Art
My artwork has been developed through many years of experience & practice in art education. Both careers have run in parallel. My artwork usually starts with loose sketches & photographic recording of the rural Irish landscape using a range of media leading to experimental mixed media work. Influences include Irish artists like Paul Henry, Jack B Yeats, Basil Blackshaw, Donald Teskey & Martin Mooney.
Bronze Cast Sculpture
Three dimensional pieces usually evolve from the realistic into the abstract and expressive when working with clay or wax. They can range in scale from small maquette sized experimental pieces to much more individualised final artworks. Outcomes are often exhibited in local galleries and can also be found in other private collections.
